KijaniBox Project Powers Communities with Sustainable Energy Solutions
Machakos, Kenya – September 2024
The KijaniBox project is making waves in rural Kenya, bringing sustainable waste-to-energy solutions to local communities. One of the project’s key pilot sites, Best Tropical Fruits Ltd., is benefiting from KijaniBox’s innovative approach to biogas energy.
Located in Machakos, Best Tropical Fruits Ltd. processes excess soft fruits like mangoes, avocados, and bananas from smallholder farmers. However, the company has faced challenges due to the unreliable and expensive grid electricity, which has hampered its growth and operational efficiency. The factory, which processes 6 tonnes of fruits daily, has also struggled with waste management, incurring high disposal costs for the 1 tonne of fruit waste generated daily.
Enter KijaniBox, a solution designed to convert organic waste into clean energy. By utilizing the fruit waste produced at Best Tropical Fruits Ltd., KijaniBox can generate biogas to power the factory’s operations, reducing reliance on grid electricity and cutting energy costs. Not only does this create a sustainable energy source, but it also tackles the factory’s waste disposal problem, offering a win-win solution for the company and the community.
“Implementing KijaniBox at our factory will not only lower our operational costs but also help us achieve environmental sustainability,” said a representative from Best Tropical Fruits Ltd. “We are excited about this new chapter for our company.”
With similar implementations planned across various sites in Kenya and Uganda, the KijaniBox project is poised to make a significant impact on local economies while addressing energy and waste management issues. As the project expands, it will provide new opportunities for smallholder farmers, entrepreneurs, and businesses, fostering economic growth and environmental stewardship.
